Resting and migrating Cranes (and other species) - please note

Tens of thousands of cranes are currently gathering in the north and east of Germany and will soon be migrating to the wintering areas in south-western Europe. Especially in the west of Germany and in Luxembourg, the calls and impressive train formations that can be heard from afar will be seen again. Many thousands of observations are reported in this time via ornitho.de and ornitho.lu. So that the collected data can be evaluated later in detail and used for nature conservation questions, we ask you for the following:

  • If possible, please report each flock separately (migrating as well as resting).
  • Please state always a time for your migrating flocks. You can enter this time by hand directly after the date, e.g. 19.10.2018 09:18.
  • If you are standing at one location for several hours on mass migration days and are recording Crane migration, please enter the time period and important information for the interpretation of the data (e.g. visibility) under "Remarks".
  • Please always specify the migration direction when observing migrating flocks. You can select the direction in the "Specifications (migration, roost etc.)" field. The comments field cannot be analysed.
  • If you report with the app NaturaList, please enter this information online later. Thank you very much!
  • Please enter flocks of resting or feeding cranes with precise location. Please enter "resting" or "foraging" in the "Specifications …" field and note - if applicable and recognizable - also the (resting) habitat.
  • Old and young birds can be easily distinguished in cranes. So if you have a little more time, count old and young birds separately and enter the information in the appropriate fields (not in the comments field). If you have only counted a part of a large group, please enter the total number and in the details only the number of differentiated individuals.
  • If you have counted cranes in the evening or in the morning at a roost, please also enter the time as well as "Roost/gathering place" in the “Specifications …” fields.
  • This information regarding resting applies in particular to geese and swans as well as other species of birds resting or foraging on agricultural habitats (e.g. lapwings, golden plovers).

Fruitful cooperation with AG Kranichschutz Germany

The AG Kranichschutz Deutschland and the DDA work closely together in the field of data collection for cranes. The information collected by ornitho on breeding, resting and migration is available to the AG Kranichschutz for detailed analyses, which are prepared for the annual report "The Crane Year", among other things. Therefore, please do not enter your observations additionally at www.kraniche.de!

We thank you very much for your support and hope that you will also be able to marvel at the fascinating spectacle of the autumn crane migration!
