Adjustments for the start of the breeding season: atlas code query and coloured dots
For a few bird species, such as the Eagle Owl, the breeding season has already begun, and in the next few weeks more and more species will start forming territories and searching for mates. Just in time for the new season, we have made some important adjustments to ornitho.de in order to be able to collect data on breeding bird species even more accurately and purposefully in future.

Adjustments to the query periods for atlas codes
Atlas codes are among the most important additional information about an observation. They provide information on whether a bird species is possibly, probably or even definitely present as a breeding bird in the area under consideration. They therefore form the basis for visualising the breeding distribution. During the species-specific breeding season, you are automatically asked to enter an atlas code. The periods entered were previously based on the „Methodenstandards zur Erfassung der Brutvögel Deutschlands“ from 2005. Since then, there have been many changes in the avian world, so a revised new edition of this standard reference will be published in March 2025. We took this revision and the start of the mapping phase for the second Atlas of German Breeding Birds (ADEBAR 2) as an opportunity to review the query periods for the atlas codes of all species and adjust them where necessary. For many species, the survey period was extended to take better account of second and subsequent broods. For some species, however, the period was also shortened in order to better exclude migration. The new, automatic survey periods apply from 1 February with the aim of maintaining them in the long term.

Colour coding of the species
Mapping for ADEBAR 2 will begin in spring 2025 in all federal states. In principle, exact numbers can be reported for all bird species, but quantitative information is particularly necessary for the less common and rarer species. These species are now labelled with a yellow dot in front of the species name both on ornitho.de and in the NaturaList app. This labelling is particularly important for mapping as part of the ADEBAR 2 project, but can also provide helpful orientation beyond the atlas project when reporting casual observations in ornitho.de.
Therefore, in future, please provide as precise information as possible on the number of individuals observed for each species marked with a yellow dot. This applies to single records as well as to records on observation lists. If it is not possible to provide exact information, the following principle applies: ‘an estimate is better than no information’.
Important: To activate the new labelling in NaturaList, you need to change the species list in the app settings to the one from ornitho.de (again). Only then will the dots be visible.

Thank you!
We would like to thank the Ernst-Commentz-Stiftung for their financial support of the work to adapt and define the new survey periods and the ornitho regional coordinators and the ornitho steering groups for their suggestions and discussions.
The colour coding of species is now also available in the iPhone version of NaturaList thanks to a grant from the Swiss Ornithological Institute.
