50 million bird observations in ornitho.de and ornitho.lu!

A Yellow wagtail near Hannover was submitted today at 9:27 am as the 50 millionth observation at ornitho.de and ornitho.lu. When the portal started in autumn 2011, nobody expected such a growth. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this – apart from you, the observers, especially the Biolovision team!

The number of records continues to increase very positively. In the first complete ornitho year 2012 the portal recorded a total of 2.6 million observation reports. Since then, the number of bird sightings has increased year after year, and in spring 2020, for the first time in a single month, more than 1 million bird sightings were reported. This is a huge amount of data, which is used for various scientific analyses from the local to the nationwide level and is used for nature conservation. Ornitho has developed into a helpful supplement to bird monitoring in Germany and has become an indispensable tool for most bird watchers.

More than 32,000 people are now registered, about two-thirds of whom also contribute their own observations – many of them regularly, some even daily. Ornitho is a portal for birdwatchers and nature lovers of all ages and levels of knowledge. Not only "professionals" exchange current observations there, also newcomers can inform themselves about the bird life of their own environment or contribute their first own observations.

The nationwide coverage is considerable and there is now hardly any area on the map for which there are no reports yet. Of the more than 10,000 municipalities in Germany and Luxembourg, more than 99% have been visited at least once in recent years. For more than 92% of the municipalities bird observations are already available from this year. Looking at individual circles, Nordfriesland on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein is in first place with more than 800,000 reports alone, just ahead of the city of Hamburg. For Luxembourg a remarkable 680,000 observations were transmitted. In contrast, North Rhine-Westphalia has the most active detectors, ahead of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

The species most frequently reported at ornitho.de and ornitho.lu with a total of more than 1 million reports is the Blackbird – at the same time, according to current estimates, the most common bird species in Germany. But by no means always the most frequently reported species are also the most common in Germany. Among the Top20 of the most frequently reported species you can also find Red Kite, Cormorant and Great White Egret. The greatest diversity of species is recorded – as can also be seen year after year in the nationwide birdrace – in districts with connection to the coast. 80% of all species reported nationwide so far have also been recorded in the district of Nordfriesland. From the inland, Münster, Hannover and Berlin are among the top 10 cities with a particularly high number of reported bird species.

These statistics provide a small insight into the extent of the bird observations available from Germany and Luxembourg. With our quarterly reports in DER FALKE we are constantly introducing new approaches and evaluation possibilities. However, the enormous potential of this data collection is far from exhausted. Institutes and universities are increasingly recognizing this and ornitho data are increasingly being incorporated into larger research projects or evaluated in the context of final theses. Not to forget the enormous number of local and regional reports, which are often largely based on the data of our portal. Contribute to improving the knowledge and understanding of the bird life little by little and report your own bird observations at ornitho.de and ornitho.lu!

We would like to thank all ornitho reporters for their support!
