The German Breeding Bird Monitoring Scheme starts into the new season – please join now!

It may be still a little to go but the beautiful songs of blackbird, tits, nuthatch and dunnock tell us spring is on its way. With rising temperatures most of the birds are now getting ready for the next breeding season. And so do we! The preparations for the start of this year’s breeding bird monitoring season on 10 March are in full swing and we are looking forward to continuing our long running scheme with the help of many keen volunteer birdwatchers.
Since 1989 population trends of all common German bird species are being monitored using standardised monitoring methods. The gathered data helps to better understand changes in numbers of our common breeding birds. Since 2004 the monitoring is carried out on 1x1 km survey plots selected randomly across and mirroring representative percentages of habitat ratios in Germany. On each survey plot breeding birds are monitored along a c. 3 km long route during four visits between March and June.

Wide-ranging use of the results for nature conservation
The results of the scheme feed into the annual report „Birds in Germany“ and are used to update the “Biodiversity and Landscape Quality” indicator of the German Government (→ BfN) as well as indicators on EU-level such as the European Farmland Bird Indicator (→ EBCC). The latter being used by the EU-Commission as a reference tool for sustainable agricultural land use.

Join now!
Throughout the whole of Germany there are 2637 survey plots available of which c. 1650 are occupied at the moment. So there is still a lot to do and many wonderful places available between the island of Rügen in the North and Lake Constance in the South!
Covering a survey plot will take between 30–40 hours. This includes fieldwork (4 visits between March and June) and analysing the results. You can check online for free survey plots nearest to you, finding out more about how they look like and for making your reservations. Deadline for taking part in the 2019 monitoring season is 10 March. Why not check right now what is available! Just go to:

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
